The aim of a patent is to protect an invention ensuring that its proprietor enjoys the exclusive right to commercially exploit it.
Thus, the proprietor of a patent does not only obtain a competitive advantage on the market, but at the same time ensures that investments into research, development, and product marketing are worthwhile.
Without the protection conferred by a patent, third parties may well produce, market, and sell products relating to the unprotected invention. Since this is legal, the inventor, who often has invested heavily into developing his invention, has no means of preventing these actions.
Patents are granted for inventions that are new and inventive. Patents may be granted for products, apparatuses, processes or uses. Patentable inventions may well be improvements of known products or combinations of known components.
